Honyin C ★ 5 · Jun 2025We had five families with small children ranging from 4 months to 5 years old and we had a blast! It was completely private with the creek running right next to the campsite. There was so much space and it exceeded all expectations. No cell service but I consider that a plus not a negative

Coal Creek Group Camp sits along the Mountain Loop Road in the western Cascades, roughly 23.5 miles east of Granite Falls on the Highway 7 Scenic Byway. The campground is a single-site group facility one large campsite that can accommodate about 25 guests and is set up to handle a mix of tents and RVs. The site is tucked in old-growth stands of cedar, fir and hemlock at the meeting point of Coal Creek and the Stillaguamish River, so you'll have river sounds and deep forest cover more than close neighbors. Amenities are straightforward and practical: campfire rings with grills, picnic tables, tent pads and vault toilets are on site. Because there is only this one group site, the campground is well suited to families or small groups seeking privacy; note that reservations are managed through Recreation.gov and once your reservation start date has begun neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager can modify that reservation. For facility-specific questions call (360) 386-8214. The setting opens immediate access to a variety of trail-based and river activities. In summer and early fall you can hike, fish, picnic or bring horses onto nearby trails; in winter the area is used for skiing and snowshoeing. Two nearby outings worth planning are the Big Four Ice Caves Trail off the Mountain Loop Highway a short but popular hike that terminates at ice fields beneath the 6,153-foot north face of Big Four Mountain (the caves tend to be exposed from August through October) and the Gold Basin Mill Pond interpretive trail, a short barrier-free walk with mill relics and a floating viewpoint across the old millpond (that trail is accessed across from Gold Basin Campground). The broader Mt. Baker Snoqualmie National Forest around Coal Creek supports auto touring, biking, boating, horse camping and horseback riding, interpretive programs, OHV use in designated areas, wildlife viewing and winter sports; on clear days Mt. Baker's snow-and-ice summit (10,781 feet) is visible on the horizon, and the forest is home to a wide range of wildlife from common black bear and diverse birdlife to less frequently seen species such as lynx, moose, wolves and wolverine.
