“We stayed here as an extended family and it was perfect for our needs. The path to the river could be a bit more accessible, but that was the only negative. There were plenty of tent spots, the kids loved running up and down the hills, and we had a great view of the night sky. ”

Esswine Group Camp sits on the gently flowing banks of the Stillaguamish River inside the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, where old-growth cedar, Douglas fir and western hemlock tower over mossy rocks and low-lying riparian habitat. The river here is a working waterway Chinook, coho, chum, pink and sockeye salmon, plus steelhead, sea-run cutthroat and bull trout use the Stillaguamish and its tributaries for spawning so anglers will find steady prospects during the runs. On clear days the high, glaciated profile of Mt. Baker is visible to the northeast; trails through nearby wilderness areas wind into subalpine terrain, and the broader forest supports a wide array of wildlife from common black bear and numerous bird species to rarer residents such as lynx, moose, wolves and wolverine (grizzly have been confirmed elsewhere in the Cascades). The campground's setting is rural but reachable: it lies roughly 16 miles east of Granite Falls along the Highway 7 Scenic Byway, accessed from the Everett/Lake Stevens corridor north of Seattle. Esswine offers a single large group campsite the facility total is one site designed to accommodate about 25 people and suitable for a mix of tents and RVs (the one site accepts both RVs and tents). The site is equipped with communal picnic tables, individual tent pads, and campfire rings with grills; vault toilets are provided on site. Recreation at the camp itself centers on hiking, fishing, picnicking and horseback riding in summer and early fall, with skiing and snowshoeing available in winter; the Pacific Crest Trail and other long-distance routes are accessible in the surrounding forest, and the North Cascades and Mount Rainier national parks are within regional day-trip range. If you plan to reserve the group site, note the reservation policy: once your reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager can modify it.
