Smith and Morehouse Campground sits just below Smith and Morehouse Reservoir on the western edge of the Uinta Mountains at about 7,800 feet, among conifers and stands of aspen with Smith and Morehouse Creek running through the site. The paved day-to-day layout includes 33 single campsites that accommodate both tents and RVs (all 33 are designated for both RV and tent use), most family sites are accessible, and each site is equipped with a picnic table and campfire ring. There are vault toilets and a campground host who sells firewood; there are no electrical or water hookups, so RV visitors should plan to be self-contained. Fees are paid by cash, check, or Scan & Pay via the recreation.gov app: campsites are $29 per night (site capacity 8 people), extra vehicles are $10, the boat launch is $10 (season pass $60), an overflow area at the boat launch is $18, and the picnic area is $15 Monday Thursday. For reservations and changes note Recreation.gov policies apply (a $10 service fee for most changes/cancellations, stricter late-cancellation and no-show penalties, and refund requests must be filed within 14 days of departure); you can modify bookings at Recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777, and facility-specific questions can be directed to (385) 273-1100. Recreation centers on the reservoir and a nearby backcountry route: the lake permits motorized boats but enforces a no-wake speed, which makes the northwest boat ramp a convenient launch for kayaks and canoes as well as small motors, and anglers commonly catch stocked rainbow trout alongside native species. Hikers and backpackers use the 14.6-mile, point-to-point Smith and Morehouse Trail (moderately trafficked) that begins near Ledgefork Campground and winds through forest, meadows and marshes toward Erickson Basin and Island Lake; the trail can be hard to follow in sections and gets hot in summer, so bring a map and compass or GPS, plenty of water, and consider a two-car shuttle or a drop-off plan. The campground provides straightforward access to Mirror Lake Scenic Byway and other High Uinta trailheads for auto touring, biking, horseback riding, wildlife viewing (moose and deer are commonly seen), and day hiking, making it a practical base for both quiet water recreation and longer backcountry outings.
