Butterfly Campground sits at about 10,300 feet on the shore of Butterfly Lake, reached by following the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway roughly 35 miles east of Kamas on State Route 150. The site is small and straightforward: 20 single campsites that accommodate both tents and RVs, each listed for $24 per night and sized for up to eight people plus one vehicle. Vault toilets are provided, but expect a simple, high-alpine setup there are no mentions of hookups or full campground services and payment is accepted by cash, check, or Scan & Pay through the recreation.gov app. Day-use visitors pay $15, extra vehicles are $10 each, and trailhead parking is $5. For site-specific questions or the latest conditions call the facility at (385) 273-1100; reservation transactions appear on credit card statements as "Recreation.gov 877-444-6777 NM." The lake itself is limited to non-motorized craft, making it a good spot for canoeing, kayaking, shore fishing and close-up wildlife viewing amid white fir stands and summer wildflowers. From these campsites you're also in the heart of the Uinta Mountains' trail network hiking, backpacking, biking, horseback riding and designated off-highway vehicle routes are all accessible from the Mirror Lake corridor, and several trailheads provide entry into the High Uintas Wilderness. Be aware of the reservation rules: a $10 service fee is withheld from refunds, changing dates outside your original reservation carries a $10 change fee, and canceling the day before or the day of arrival results in a $10 fee plus forfeiture of the first night's use fee; no-shows are assessed a $20 fee and forfeit the first night. Interagency Pass discounts (Senior/Golden Age, Access/Golden Access, Senior Lifetime) apply only to the recreation fee for individual campsites and require the passholder to occupy the site. Refund requests can be submitted via your recreation.gov profile (within seven days after a reservation ends) and emergency closures will be fully refunded.
