Upper Stillwater Campground sits on the southern flank of the Uinta Mountains, directly below the concrete face of Upper Stillwater Dam at about 8,000 feet. The site feels open rather than heavily shaded stands of ponderosa and lodgepole pine with aspen pockets give only sparse cover, and summer wildflowers fill the understory so plan for sun exposure during the day. Rock Creek runs through the drainage and offers rainbow and brook trout fishing close to camp; the access road to the reservoir itself is closed to vehicles, so reaching the water requires a hike. The Rock Creek Trail starts just outside the campground and is the primary route into the High Uintas Wilderness, where hiking, backpacking, horseback riding and backcountry fishing are popular. For broader recreation around Ashley National Forest you'll find opportunities for biking, boating, OHV riding, picnicking, swimming, visitor center resources, wildlife viewing, and overnight stays in fire lookouts or cabins, as well as interpretive programs at scattered locations. The campground is small and straightforward: there are 11 total campsites 10 that accommodate both tents and RVs and one that is RV-only plus a single group site that holds up to 32 people and includes picnic tables, a grill, a campfire ring, three tent pads and RV parking. Individual single and double-family sites each come with a picnic table and campfire ring. Basic services are provided on site, including flush toilets, drinking water, trash collection and an on-site campground host; a dump station is available 3 miles away at Yellowpine Campground. Fees, reservation options, seasonal opening dates and any current road or fire restrictions are managed by the Ashley National Forest, so check the forest website or recreation.gov before you go; also remember that the high-elevation location and the hike-only access to the reservoir affect what to pack and how you plan day trips.
