Moon Lake Campground sits at about 8,100 feet on the lakeshore of a roughly two-mile-long Moon Lake on the southern slope of the high Uinta range, where stands of lodgepole pine, aspen and Douglas fir shade the shore. The site is a fairly large, organized campground with 54 total campsites divided evenly between two loops Loop L and Loop U each containing 27 sites. Forty-six sites are configured to serve both RVs and tents, while eight are tent-only; most parking spurs are approximately 16 by 65 feet but dimensions vary by campsite, so check the individual site listing if you have a long rig. Every site includes a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill; the campground has flush toilets, drinking water (spigots located throughout), trash collection and paved roads and spurs. A host is on site and firewood can be bought at the adjacent Moon Lake Resort, which also stocks groceries, ice, soda and fishing bait, and rents small motorboats. Access is from Duchesne via State Highway 87 toward Mountain Home and Forest Road 131 the paved drive from Duchesne is about 36 miles but be prepared for some potholes on the way. Recreation here centers on the water and the nearby High Uintas backcountry. Moon Lake supports canoeing and motor-boating, and anglers chase a mix of tiger and rainbow trout (stocked annually), brook trout, kokanee salmon and splake; the campground has several sites with lake views and a few with direct lake access. Trails and equestrian routes start at the campground, including the Lake Fork Trail and the Brown Duck Mountain Loop, and the Fish Creek National Recreation Trail begins at Moon Lake Dam and climbs from about 8,200 feet to 10,400 feet over 5.6 miles into terrain dotted with alpine lakes. Flying J Outfitters, a mile before the campground at the Lake Fork trailhead, runs scheduled and walk-up horse rides and drop/pack trips into the High Uintas, while the broader Ashley National Forest around Moon Lake offers mountain biking, OHV opportunities, interpretive programs, wildlife viewing, historic fire lookouts and cabin overnight options. For up-to-date information on seasonal openings, fees and reservations, check the U.S. Forest Service or recreation.gov before you go.
