“Quiet campground on the upper branch of the South Fork of the McKenzie. No loud or drunken campers. Clean restrooms. Fresh water from a hand pump well. Bear on the road about a mile away. No cell service and none for many miles.”

Frissell Crossing Campground sits beside the South Fork of the McKenzie River, a small developed site originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934. The campground is reached from Highway 126 east of Blue River via Aufderheide Drive (Forest Service Road 19), then another stretch of forest road to the site; it lies at about 2,600 feet elevation and is set back from the main road so many campsites spread around an open meadow or down toward the creek. There are 11 campsites in total, and each is listed for use by both RVs and tents; facility amenities at the campground include vault toilets, metal fire rings, picnic tables, hand-pumped drinking water, and garbage collection. Douglas fir, rhododendron and vine maple frame the sites, and the creek access and meadow layout give the place a quiet, low-capacity character compared with larger campgrounds. Outdoor options around Frissell Crossing range from short walks and creekside fishing to longer trail outings. Nearby trail systems and destinations include the Three Sisters Wilderness, Box Canyon Trail and Horse Camp, Mink Lake Basin Trail, Terwilliger Hot Springs, and Cougar Lake Reservoir, and hot springs and trailheads for hiking and mountain biking are all within roughly 10 miles. The broader Willamette National Forest offers biking, boating, fishing, horse camping, OHV routes, swimming, wildlife viewing and winter-sports opportunities, so you can use this small campground as a base for varied day trips. The provided information does not detail fees, reservation rules, or seasonal openings, so plan to check the Willamette National Forest or local ranger district for current conditions, any fire restrictions, and campsite availability there are only 11 sites, so confirming ahead is recommended.
