“I love camping at the Point Campground. It would be wonderful if sites that are reserved, but unoccupied would be put back on Rec. Gov so they can be utilized by those looking for a camping experience without having to book 6 months ahead. ”
“I really loved this campground and its location next to the water at Elk Lake. There are mosquitoes but you just have to go prepared, and don’t forget your paddleboards and fishing poles!”

Point Campground sits on the shore of Elk Lake in Deschutes National Forest, offering close water access and wide views from various points around the shoreline toward Mt. Bachelor and South Sister. The immediate landscape mixes wetlands, mixed forest and rocky slopes that attract shorebirds, deer, porcupine, bats and the occasional black bear, so expect a true lakeshore forest feel rather than a manicured park. Elk Lake is open to both motorized and non-motorized boats, so you'll see everything from paddleboards and sail rigs to fishing boats; swimming, fishing, windsurfing and water skiing are all common here. The campground is reached from Bend by traveling roughly 34 miles west on County Road 46 (the Cascade Lakes Highway), and it sits along the larger Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway route that links dozens of lakes, trails and volcano-land features Newberry National Volcanic Monument and the Lava River Cave are about a 45-minute drive and make excellent day excursions. Practical comforts at Point are straightforward and rustic: the campground contains 9 total campsites, and each of those 9 sites is set up to handle both RVs/trailers and tent campers. There are no electrical hookups, but every site comes with a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill; vault toilets are on site and a boat ramp provides direct lake access. Reservations are accepted, but be aware of the booking policy: once your reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager will be able to modify your reservation. Because fees, seasonal openings and current road or trail conditions can change, check Recreation.gov or the Deschutes National Forest office before you go if you need up-to-date information on availability, permits or winter access; the surrounding Forest offers many other outdoor options year-round, from hiking and biking to auto touring and winter sports.
