South Campground sits at the southern edge of Hosmer Lake inside Deschutes National Forest, reached by following the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway southwest from Bend and turning a short distance onto Forest Road 4625; the campground appears on the right just before Mallard Marsh. The lake itself is shallow and clear, draining at its north end through a porous rim of lava, and is managed as a fly-fishing-only waterbody where brook trout, rainbow trout and larger Atlantic salmon can often be seen near the surface. Shoreline access is limited by marshy vegetation, so most visitors experience the water by canoe or kayak from the campground's boat ramp (boat-launch parking is day use only and requires a recreation fee separate from camping charges). On a clear day the site lines up views of Mt. Bachelor, the South Sisters and Broken Top, and the surrounding area offers hiking and horseback riding opportunities as well as easy access to the 66-mile Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway for longer auto tours and lake-hopping. The campground is small and straightforward: 22 sites in total, each set up to accommodate both tents and recreational vehicles and each equipped with a picnic table plus a fire ring with grill. Basic vault toilets are provided, but there is no potable water at the site, so plan to bring your own supply. The boat ramp provides lake access but keep in mind boat launch parking is strictly day use and carries a separate recreation fee; once your reservation start date has begun neither the Recreation.gov contact center nor the campground manager can modify that reservation. If you're planning a quiet, low-impact stay focused on paddling, angling, wildlife viewing or short trail outings, South Campground gives you direct lake access and simple, well-spaced sites without the trappings of developed hookups.
