“Our campsite was very clean and restroom was well stocked. The location was very convenient to the lake and being so close to the Deschutes River made it even better.”
“Campsite was large and good space from neighboring sites. Fire restrictions allowed for campfire, plenty of available slash near enough to get wood from. River access to take vessels onto the lake. Fantastic. ”
“Beautiful spot with modest but well maintained facilities. Wish I had a kayak with me because that would have been perfect ”

Little Lava Lake Campground sits along the Cascade Lakes National Scenic Byway in the Central Oregon Cascades, roughly 38 miles southwest of Bend with a short spur on Forest Road to reach the shoreline. The campground occupies a mix of sites under a mature lodgepole pine canopy and a few spots that sit right along the lakeshore and the Deschutes River, at about 4,740 feet elevation. There are 16 campsites in total: 15 are designated for both RVs and tents and one is tent-only. Facilities are simple but functional expect a lake-side boat ramp and a day-use area (both of which carry a fee) and basic campsite amenities typical of Forest Service campgrounds; there is no published information here about hookups or additional services. The setting is defined by lava outcrops and bulrush-lined shorelines on the 130-acre lake, giving a low-rise, forest-and-lava character rather than a manicured resort feel. Recreation at Little Lava Lake centers on water and trail access: the 130-acre lake reaches about 20 feet at its deepest and supports planted rainbow trout, some brook trout, and established populations of whitefish and tui chub, with bait, lures, flies, still-fishing and trolling all allowed. Paddling and swimming are straightforward off the shore or from small boats launched at the ramp; short shoreline walks and longer hikes into the surrounding Deschutes National Forest are options for those wanting to explore beyond camp. The broader forest offers many additional pursuits auto touring, mountain biking, boating on nearby lakes, horseback trails, wildlife viewing and winter sports among them and attractions such as the Lava Lands Visitor Center and Newberry National Volcanic Monument are a short drive away. Note that day-use and boat-ramp use incur fees, and once your reservation start date has begun neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager can modify your reservation, so plan arrivals and changes accordingly.
