Cow Meadow Campground sits at the northeast edge of Crane Prairie Reservoir where Snow Creek and the Deschutes River empty into the lake, just off the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway roughly 45 miles south of Bend. The small, open campground has 18 campsites, and each site is designed to take either an RV or a tent (all 18 sites are both RV and tent sites); trailers are welcome but there are no water or electrical hookups. Plan to bring your own drinking water there is no water at this facility and to pack out what you can, as amenities are basic: each site has a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill, vault toilets are provided, and a boat ramp on site can accommodate small craft. Access involves a short drive on Forest Road 40 and a couple miles on unpaved forest roads off the Cascade Lakes Highway, so factor road conditions into your travel time and vehicle choice. The campground is a practical base for lake-centered recreation and wildlife watching: Crane Prairie is managed for rainbow trout, mountain whitefish, brook trout and largemouth bass, and both motorized and non-motorized boats are allowed (a 10 MPH speed limit is enforced on the reservoir). Waterfowl and raptors are common sandhill cranes, Canada geese, bald eagles and osprey are frequently seen while the surrounding forest supports black-backed woodpecker, Williamson's sapsucker, mountain chickadee and mammals including deer, beaver and the occasional black bear. Nearby Osprey Point offers interpretive panels and nesting-platform viewing, and the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway gives easy driving access to high lakes and views of South Sister, Broken Top and Mt. Bachelor. For a deeper look at the region's geology, Lava Lands Visitor Center is about 30 miles away and Newberry Caldera (Paulina and East Lake, Paulina Peak and Paulina Falls) is about 45 miles; check Recreation.gov for current fees, seasonal openings, and note that once your reservation start date has begun neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager can modify your reservation.
