Little Fawn Campground sits on the southeastern shore of Elk Lake, roughly 35 37 miles southwest of Bend along the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway, then a short drive east on Forest Road 4625 to the campground entrance. Though its name includes "Group," the site layout consists of eight single-family sites that each accommodate both tents and RVs; all sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Sites come with a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill, and the campground provides drinking water and vault toilets, but no electrical hookups are available. A boat ramp is located inside the campground and a large day-use area and sandy beach give plenty of shoreline for swimming, sunning, and launching small watercraft. Elk Lake is the focal point for activity here: boating, windsurfing, water skiing and fishing are the main draws, and swimmers will find an easy entry at the beach. The shoreline, nearby wetlands, mixed forests and rocky slopes create habitat for shorebirds, porcupines, deer, bats and the occasional black bear, so bring standard food-storage supplies and practice bear-aware camping. On clear days you can pick out South Sister and Mount Bachelor across the lake. If you want to expand beyond the lake, the Lava Lands Visitor Center and Newberry National Volcanic Monument are within easy reach, and the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway itself provides a 66-mile corridor of alpine lakes, viewpoints and trailheads for hiking, biking, fishing and winter sports. For current season dates, fees and any additional regulations, check with the Deschutes National Forest office before you go.
