“Beautiful and secluded. Lots of space between sites. It's definitely a more rugged camping experience, but worth it if you're up for the hike. :-) One thing to be aware of with site 10, there are a lot of exposed tree roots and rocks that can be a tripping hazard.”

Sunnyside Campground sits on the southeast shore of Cougar Reservoir at about 1,700 feet, shaded by a fairly dense grove of conifers that keeps most sites cool through summer afternoons. The campground is small 13 sites in all with five sites configured to accommodate both small RVs and tents and eight sites for tents only. Each individual site includes a picnic table and a metal fire ring; vault toilets and garbage collection are provided, but there is no potable water on site, so plan to bring enough for your stay. The single entrance road is steep, so while five sites are technically listed for RV use, motorhomes and trailers are not recommended; vehicular access approaches the campground from Highway 126 east of Blue River via Aufderheide Drive (Forest Road 19) and a short spur road to the lake, roughly a 14-mile drive from Blue River. The campground gives immediate access to Cougar Reservoir for boating, swimming and shoreline fishing, and it serves as a convenient base for hiking and day trips in the surrounding Cougar Recreation Area and Willamette National Forest. Nearby trails and destinations include Rebel Creek into the Three Sisters Wilderness, the French Pete and Box Canyon trails, Indian Ridge Lookout, and several shorter day hikes; Terwilliger Hot Springs at Rider Creek is a popular day-use soak after a day on the lake. Wildlife and wildflower viewing are common in the area, and the broader forest offers many other activities biking, horse camps, OHV riding, fire lookout/cabin overnight opportunities, winter sports, and more. Fees, reservations and seasonal openings can change, so check current information with the Willamette National Forest or recreation.gov before you go.
