Clear Lake Campground sits on the eastern shore of a 560-acre irrigation lake at about 3,600 feet in a mixed-conifer forest just north of the Warm Springs Indian Reservation. There are 27 single-family campsites in total 15 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 12 tent-only sites each equipped with a picnic table and a metal fire ring with grill. Parking surfaces are gravel and dirt; vault toilets, drinking water, and trash collection are provided, but there are no electrical or sewer hookups. A campground host is on site and sells firewood. Access is straightforward from the Portland area: the campground lies roughly 35 miles east of Sandy on Highway 26, then a short drive on Forest Road 2630; for up-to-date fees, reservation policies and seasonal openings call the facility at (541) 352-6002. Recreation centers on the lake and the surrounding hills: boating, sailing and swimming are common (lake speeds are limited to 10 mph, and a steady breeze makes sailing pleasant and keeps bugs down), and anglers can expect a variety of trout. A day-use picnic area near the boat ramp is convenient for families, and a hiking trail from the north end of the lake links to the Pacific Crest Trail for longer treks. In late summer and early fall the forest yields abundant edible mushrooms, and wildlife viewing is good year-round. In winter, miles of snow-covered roads and trails open up for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling popular areas include Shellrock Creek and High Rock off Forest Road 57 while nearby Government Camp, about 12 miles northwest, provides visitor services, restaurants and ski areas.
