“This was an excellent group camping area. The sites were clean and the toilets were well-maintained with the camp host cleaning and sanitizing them daily. The area is private and has many places to explore. ”
“We had an amazing experience here. Secluded at the headwaters of the Salmon River. Off the beaten path but easy to find. Would not recommend a low clearance car. ”

Chemeketan Campground sits at the headwaters of the Salmon River where lodgepole pines thin out against the rugged Sawtooth peaks and the river runs along the campground's edge. The site is small in terms of campsite count there is 1 campsite on record: a single group site that can accommodate up to 150 people and is classified as 1 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites but the Forest Service makes that space available as either a reserved group site or, when not reserved, for individual use on a first-come, first-served basis. Basic facilities include vault toilets, picnic tables and grills; there are no hookups or developed water sources listed, so plan to bring your own water and pack out trash if necessary. Access is on a dirt road about 4 miles off Highway 75 south of Stanley (turn between mile markers 163 and 162), and you must ford a stream to reach the campground trucks, RVs and higher-clearance cars typically manage the crossing, but water levels can vary, so check current conditions with the Sawtooth National Forest office before you head out. Recreation centers on the river and the surrounding trail network: anglers find rainbow trout, westslope cutthroat trout and the occasional hybrid cutbow or bull trout in the Salmon River at the site, while the Idaho Centennial Trail is easily reached for day hikes or longer backpacking. A short drive provides access to nearby alpine lakes Alturas, Perkins, Pettit and Yellowbelly for additional fishing, canoeing and shoreline hiking, and the Sawtooth National Recreation Area as a whole offers roughly 750 miles of multiuse trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding. For broader trip planning, note average summer temperatures near Chemeketan are cool (about 78°F high and 40°F low), and the region supports a wide range of activities across the forest auto touring, boating, OHV use, wildlife viewing, winter sports and more with seasonal events in the valley such as a July Arts & Crafts Fair and September festivals including Wagon Days and the Salmon Festival.
