About

Baumgartner Campground sits along the gentle sweep of the South Fork Boise River about 11 miles east of Featherville on Forest Road 227, at roughly 5,200 feet beneath tall ponderosa pines. The campground's most distinctive feature is Baumgartner Hot Springs: 101-degree water is piped into a large concrete soaking pool that is open during daylight hours, drained and refilled daily, and pressure-washed on Tuesday mornings (it may not open until around noon on that day). The river here is popular with anglers pursuing wild and stocked rainbow trout and with families who wade and splash in shallow stretches; an accessible path leads to a bench overlooking the swimming/fishing hole at the north end of the site. Nearby interpretive attractions include the short John Baumgartner gravesite walk and a 1/4-mile nature trail that climbs into the forest, while a network of trailheads Kelley Creek/Iron Mountain, Virginia Gulch, Willow Creek, Van Gulch and Big Water begin in the area for hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders. Kelley Creek Flats Recreation Area is adjacent, offering additional dispersed camping and livestock corrals, and the historic Iron Mountain Lookout sits about a 12-mile one-way trip along the Kelley Creek trail (open to vehicles 50" or less in width). The campground contains 31 total sites: 30 that accommodate both RVs and tents and one RV-only site; among these are single- and double-family sites, one quad site and a large group site (Site 100). Each site comes with a picnic table, fire ring and utility table; vault toilets and drinking water are provided. Roads and parking spurs within the main campground are paved (Site 100 is not), and while ATVs, UTVs and off-road motorcycles are a big part of recreation in this part of the Sawtooth National Forest, they may not be ridden inside the campground you may trailer them in and out but the trailer must fit within your camping spur. Because access involves about 11 miles of dirt road from Featherville (directions are reached via Highway 20 east from I-84, Exit 95), and because fees, reservations and seasonal openings can change, check with the local Forest Service ranger district before you go for current information on reservations, fees and road conditions.
