Tunnel Mills II sits beside the East Fork of the North Fork of the North Fork American River in the Tahoe National Forest, a relatively remote stretch of north-central California reached from I-80 at the Emigrant Gap exit via Texas Hill Road (about an 8-mile drive south from the freeway). The campground is shaded by cedar, pine and fir and sits close enough to the creek-sized river that anglers often set up at the water's edge for rainbow trout. There are just two group sites in the campground (total campsites: 2), each able to accommodate up to 30 people and six vehicles; one site is open to both RVs and tents, while the other is tent-only. Facilities are basic and practical picnic tables, campfire rings and vault toilets are provided so plan to bring your own water and supplies and expect a fairly rustic, low-infrastructure experience. The surrounding national forest offers a broader menu of outdoor options: fishing on the river, hiking and hunting in nearby public lands, and motorized trails for OHV riders. Foot-trail access into the North Fork American Wild and Scenic River canyon is nearby, and a short distance east on I-80 you'll find additional non-motorized routes around Grouse Ridge and the network of trails at Donner Summit. If you're reserving, note the campground follows standard Forest Service reservation policies: there is no change fee when you adjust dates within the original reservation, but early departures can result in forfeited fees; where recorded, no-shows are assessed a $20 fee and forfeit the first night's fee (staffed facilities are recommended to hold sites until check-out time the day after arrival). Because Tunnel Mills II is in a remote area, many such sites are noted as automatically checked in on the arrival date if you expect to be delayed, contact the managing office so a "no-show" charge can be avoided.
