“Great camping spot in the middle of the woods and by the river. Great escape.”
“Beautiful campground! In the early autumn, on a Sunday night, we shared the entire campground with only three other camping groups. Spring water from a pipe tasted amazing. A lovely, peaceful getaway.”

Perched along the North Fork of the North Fork American River, North Fork Campground sits in a quiet stretch of Tahoe National Forest framed by cedar, pine and fir. The campground has 16 total campsites: 14 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 2 tent-only sites, all configured as single-family sites. Each campsite includes a picnic table and a campfire ring; the campground also provides vault toilets and a drinking water source. A short walk from the far end of the loop brings you to a creek-sized stretch of river with a popular swimming hole and easy bank access for casting a line rainbow trout are a frequent catch here making the site a compact, river-focused basecamp without the services of larger developed parks. Trail access and vehicle routes expand your options beyond the river: foot trails drop into the North Fork American Wild and Scenic River canyon, and a network of hiking and OHV trails radiates through the surrounding hills. For longer day routes, the Grouse Ridge Non-Motorized Area and Donner Summit lie a short drive east on Interstate 80. The wider Tahoe National Forest offers additional opportunities for auto touring, biking, boating, horseback riding, picnicking and wildlife viewing. North Fork is reached from I-80 at Emigrant Gap via Texas Hill Road (approximately 6.5 miles from the exit), and its relatively remote setting means staffing can vary; where facilities are staffed a $20 no-show fee and forfeiture of the first night's recreation fee may apply, while many remote sites are recorded as automatically checked in. There is no change fee when extending or shortening a reservation if the change includes dates from the original booking, and switching to a campsite at the same price and dates carries no change fee; if you leave early you may forfeit some or all recreation fees, so contact the managing office if you're running late or need to alter plans.
