“The traffic on the highway that was 20 feet from our tent never died down enough to make the trip enjoyable. ”

YUBA RIVER RANGER STATION

Hampshire Rocks Campground sits on the north bank of the upper South Yuba River in a stand of lodgepole pines, where the river runs gently through a mix of shady pools and sunlit gravel bars. The facility is run by Tahoe National Forest and offers 24 single-family campsites; each site is set up for both tents and RVs and comes with a picnic table and a campfire ring, while vault toilets and potable drinking water are available at the loop. Some sites sit right along the river, making it easy to step down for a swim or cast for rainbow trout, and the historic California Emigrant Trail actually crosses the campground for hikers and history-minded visitors. The forested setting keeps temperatures relatively cool compared with lower elevations, and the nearby network of roads and dirt tracks opens options for mountain biking, road cycling, off-highway vehicle riding, horseback riding, and wildlife viewing within the broader Tahoe National Forest. Getting here is straightforward from Truckee: follow I-80 west about 17 miles and take the Rainbow/Big Bend exit to reach the campground; signage from the interstate directs you to the entrance. Beyond on-site recreation, Hampshire Rocks is a convenient base for exploring Historic Route 40 and attractions such as Donner Lake (about 14 miles east), China Wall, Rainbow Bridge, Sugar Bowl, Lake Van Norden and Ice Lakes, plus nearby trailheads for the PCT at Donner Summit, Loch Leven and Castle Peak; Fordyce offers a nearby 4x4 route and Grouse Ridge is a non-motorized ridge area for quieter hikes. Practical matters: reservations and fees are managed under Tahoe National Forest rules where a facility records arrivals, a no-show is assessed a $20 fee and forfeits the first night's recreation fee (so call if you're delayed), there's no change fee when adjustments stay within the original reservation dates, and early departures can result in forfeited fees.
