“There was an off road bike race the weekend we were there. We left a day early due to crowds and trails that were unsafe for horses due to the 100 or so bikes anticipated.”
“if skillman had drinking water it would be great or at least a place near by to get water ?????????? also bathrooms were clean.”
“Great weather, pretty quiet spot and everyone was respectful, bathrooms could be better, really old and smelly, lots of flies. Pretty good sized spots, wish they were a little more spread out, overall a solid place to consider ”

Skillman Campground sits at about 3,700 feet in a stand of dogwood, cedar and Douglas fir, and is laid out for both overnight recreation and working stock. The site inventory is small and specific: 16 campsites in all, 11 of which are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents and 5 designated equestrian sites. Individual sites are roomy enough for trucks with trailers, and each single site is permitted to hold up to six people, four horses and two vehicles. Several sites are equipped for horses sites 3, 7, 9, 11, 13 and 15 each have two horse pens, while site 4 is a double site with four pens and water troughs are scattered through the campground. The mix of vehicle-friendly sites and dedicated horse facilities makes Skillman a practical stop for riders moving along the regional trails or families towing trailers. The campground sits along the Yuba-Donner Scenic Byway (Highway 20) roughly 14 miles east of Nevada City, and is easy to reach from I-80 via the Highway 20 corridor; follow signs for Skillman and the campground access road. One of the biggest draws here is direct access to the Pioneer Trail, a 25-mile National Recreation Trail (designated 2003) used for horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking and cross-country skiing depending on season, while the broader Tahoe National Forest offers auto touring, boating, fishing, OHV riding on nearby Chalk Bluff trails, picnicking, swimming and wildlife viewing. Historic mining towns such as Nevada City and Washington are within easy driving distance for supplies, dining and sightseeing, and nearby interpretive trails and scenic overlooks (Alpha and Omega, Washington Scenic Overlook, Rock Creek Nature Trail, South Yuba River) add variety to a stay. Note the campground's reservation rules: no-show customers (where recorded) incur a $20 no-show fee and forfeit the first night's recreation fee, changes that include original reservation dates typically carry no change fee, and early departures may forfeit some or all fees if you're en route but delayed the facility recommends contacting the campground to help avoid a no-show charge.
