Forbes Creek Group Campground sits on the southeast side of Sugar Pine Reservoir in Tahoe National Forest and is operated and maintained by the Forest Service. The site consists of two group campsites Madrone and Rocky Ridge and the campground total is two sites. Each group site is set up to accommodate both RVs and tents, allowing RVs, trailers and tents, and each can hold up to 50 people and 18 vehicles. Both sites share a central cooking and picnic area with multiple tables and a large campfire circle; there is also an unloading area and accessible parking within the campground. The units sit among stands of cedar and ponderosa pine at about 3,600 feet elevation, with direct views toward the 160-acre reservoir; summer days are typically warm while nights cool off noticeably. The campground puts you close to water-based activities on Sugar Pine Reservoir fishing, canoeing, swimming and boating and a trail system connects the two group sites to the lake and the nearby boat ramp. The North Fork of the American River is also nearby for additional fishing and swimming opportunities, and the surrounding forest contains many miles of hiking, biking and off-highway vehicle trails for exploring. For other regional options, Tahoe National Forest supports horseback riding and horse camping, hunting, wildlife viewing and scenic auto touring. Practical details such as fees, reservation policies and seasonal availability are set by the Forest Service, so call or check the Tahoe National Forest recreation website before you go; the campground is reached from the Foresthill/Auburn area by following Forest Road 10/Sugar Pine Road toward the Sugar Pine Recreation Area, with the group sites located a short distance past the park entrance.
