Canyon Point sits high on the Mogollon Rim country of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest at about 7,500 feet, surrounded by pines and aspens that make for cool, shaded campsites and a strong scent of resin in the air. The campground offers 102 individual sites that accommodate both tents and RVs (motor homes and trailers up to 75 feet are permitted), plus five double sites for larger families and two group sites sized for roughly 25 and 55 people. Each site comes with a picnic table and a campfire ring with a grill; the campground also provides restrooms and showers and sells firewood. Three single-unit sites are accessible. On weekend evenings families often gather at the small amphitheater for Forest Service ranger programs, and the campground's layout and services make it a convenient base for anglers and boaters headed to Willow Springs Lake, about five miles away. The setting is what most visitors come for: the rim's edge and nearby trailheads put hikers within reach of the Sinkhole and dramatic escarpment views where the high country drops toward the desert below (locals pronounce Mogollon as "muggy-own"). Summer days are notably cooler than the lowlands often 20 40 degrees cooler than Phoenix but afternoon thunderstorms can develop during the monsoon season from late June through August, and nights are brisk year-round; come prepared for rain and cool temperatures after sunset. Beyond hiking and fishing you can access a wide array of forest recreation biking, horseback riding and horse camping, wildlife viewing, OHV routes, fire lookout rentals and cabin overnight options making Canyon Point a practical gateway to varied outdoor pursuits. For up-to-date information on fees, reservations and site availability, call the campground office at (928) 535-0181; Canyon Point lies on State Highway 260 between Payson and Heber (milepost 287, roughly 4.5 miles east of the Rim Visitor Information Station and about 20 miles west of Heber), with the small community of Forest Lakes a couple of miles to the east for supplies.
