“The road in really needs work, but the campground itself was well maintained. We were the only large rig during our stay -- 30-foot travel trailer -- but we encountered no issues due to size. The camp host was very helpful and cordial.”
“Such a great place. Took our oldest daughter (5 years old) on her first camping trip up here. Very well kept and such nice people around. Lots of things to see and go do all in close range. And major stores in Payson are only about 30 minutes away. Perfect spot. ”

Black Canyon Rim Campground sits on a relatively flat, sandy bench among tall ponderosa pines about 13 miles west of Heber, Arizona, offering a quiet forest-basecamp character rather than steep, rocky terrain. The site is a common stop for people traveling the General Crook National Recreation Trail and is within easy walking distance of the small, historic grave site of Stott, Scott, and Wilson from the Pleasant Valley War era. Wildlife viewing is a regular part of the experience here visitors often spot a herd of wild horses that move through the area and sometimes head down to Black Canyon Lake to drink. For anglers and boaters, Black Canyon Lake is roughly 2.5 miles northeast of the campground and allows fishing and boating with electric motors only, while the broader Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest surrounding the campground supports hiking, biking, horseback riding and off-highway vehicle routes, plus dispersed picnicking and trail access. The campground has 20 sites of varying sizes: 19 sites are set up to accommodate both RVs and tents and one site is tent-only. All sites include a campfire ring with grill and a picnic table; there is drinking water, accessible vault toilets, trash service and a campground host on site. Some sites can handle pull trailers, 5th-wheel trailers, and motorhomes up to 40 feet, and smaller rigs or pop-ups are also welcome. Access is on sand and gravel forest roads (Forest Roads 300 and 86 intersect at the campground), and basic services gas, phone and groceries are available in Forest Lakes about 8 miles west or in Heber about 13 miles east. Fees at the campground must be paid by cash or check only; for up-to-date information about seasonal openings, reservations or other policies, call the facility at (928) 535-0181.
