About

Aspen Campground sits at about 7,000 feet in a dense stand of pines and aspens on the shore of Woods Canyon Lake, roughly northeast of Payson on Highway 260 near Heber. The facility is laid out in four loops that alternate between open meadow and thicker forest, and the 131 campsites are all configured to accommodate both tents and RVs; sites are generally well spaced for privacy and quiet. Roads inside the campground are paved, which makes for easy bicycle rides and straightforward vehicle access, and a paved spur from the Rim Road brings you to the lake area about a mile from the main approach. There are no on-site showers here the nearest are about 10 miles away at Canyon Point Campground so plan accordingly. On the water side, Woods Canyon Lake supports a marina with a full-service store (groceries, firewood), boat rentals and a boat ramp; only electric motors are allowed on the lake. For additional supplies such as gas, phone service and more groceries, the small community of Forest Lakes is the closest option, and for facility-specific questions you can call (928) 535-0181. The campground is a popular base for trout fishing, hiking, boating and photography as part of the larger Rim Lakes Recreation Area; an easy trail loops the lake and two other high-elevation lakes are a short drive away. Forest Service rangers often offer weekend educational programs that families appreciate, and the paved campground routes are pleasant for short bike tours. Wildlife is abundant and varied expect to see birds, squirrels, deer and elk, and be aware that skunks and bears are common visitors to camp sites, so use bear-safe food storage practices. Summer days are typically comfortable because of the elevation, but afternoon thunderstorms are frequent from late June through August and nights can run cool; pack layers and rain gear. Beyond the immediate campground, Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest offers a wide range of outdoor options including camping, hiking, biking, horseback riding and opportunities for overnight stays in historic fire lookouts or cabins stop by the Mogollon Rim Visitor Center (open weekends Memorial Day through Labor Day) for maps and current trail or forest-condition information.
