Crook Campground sits in a tall ponderosa pine stand at about 7,500 feet on the Mogollon Rim in north-central Arizona, a few miles off State Route 260 and just down the road from Woods Canyon Lake. The campground is bordered by the paved Meadow Trail, which leads roughly 1 mile north to Woods Canyon Lake (the most popular of the Rim Lakes area's four lakes) and about a quarter mile south to the Rim Lakes Vista and the Rim Trail, where hikers are rewarded with broad views over the escarpment. Anglers and boaters come for trout fishing and small-craft boating (Woods Canyon Lake allows electric motors only); cyclists, horseback riders and photographers also use the nearby trails and shoreline. Wildlife is common you can expect birds, squirrels, mule deer and sometimes elk and summer days are generally cool because of the elevation, though afternoon thunderstorms are frequent from late June through August and nights can be noticeably chilly. The campground is configured for groups, with two group sites (the verified campsite total is 2) arranged as two loops in a cul-de-sac layout; each group area can host up to 110 campers and 26 vehicles, with parallel parking only. These sites accommodate both RVs and tents, although some spots are less suited to pitching tents. A central picnic shelter sits between the group areas, and basic services include a nearby dump station, firewood sold onsite and at Woods Canyon Store, and groceries at the Woods Canyon Store; fuller services (gas, additional food and groceries) are available in Forest Lakes about 9 miles east and in Payson about 34 miles to the west on Highway 260. For facility-specific questions or to confirm availability, call the campground phone at (928) 535-0181.
