Spillway Campground sits on the shore of 52-acre Woods Canyon Lake in the Rim Lakes Recreation Area, just northeast of Payson near the small town of Heber. At roughly 7,500 feet the site is shaded by ponderosa pine, oak and Douglas fir, and it offers easy access to lakeside walking, an easy loop trail around the water, and the Rim Lakes Vista Trail less than a mile away for longer hikes and views along the Mogollon Rim. Anglers come for trout fishing in both the lake and nearby streams, and boats are allowed on Woods Canyon Lake only with electric motors; two other lakes in the Rim Lakes complex are a short drive away. The paved roads through the recreation area make pleasant routes for afternoon bike rides, ranger-led educational programs are often offered on weekends, and the surrounding Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest provides a wider variety of opportunities from horseback riding and OHV routes to wildlife viewing and overnight stays in historic fire lookouts or cabins if you want to explore beyond the shoreline. Summer days are typically comfortable because of the elevation, but be prepared for afternoon thunderstorms from late June through August and for cool nights year-round. The campground is a relatively small facility with 24 individual sites, each configured to accommodate both tents and RVs, plus a single group site that can host up to about 25 people for small gatherings. Sites are shaded and come with a level spur, picnic table, fire ring and a charcoal grill; vault restrooms and water hydrants are on site, and the campsites, loop road and service points comply with the Architectural Barriers Act for accessibility. The main loop road is fairly tight and flanked by trees, so trailers or motorhomes longer than about 32 feet are not recommended check individual spur lengths before you arrive. Boat rentals and basic camping supplies are sold at the Woods Canyon Store; the nearest public showers are at Canyon Point Campground about 10 miles away.
