“Very friendly hosts and also met some nice guests. Bathroom smelly is my only issue. ”

Perched at about 5,640 feet along the spring-fed Christopher Creek, Christopher Creek Campground feels a world away from the desert below the Mogollon Rim. The creek runs just below the rim and threads the site, with campsites arranged on both banks beneath ponderosa pines, junipers, oaks and manzanita shrubs. There are 41 campsites in all: 30 sites are suited for both RVs and tents and 11 are tent-only; the campground also includes a group site that can accommodate up to 25 people. Family-friendly facilities include three natural swimming holes cut into the creek where campers commonly cool off in summer, and a visitor-host on site ask the host for directions to individual sites. Many sites can be reserved in advance, while a limited number are held for first-come, first-served visitors who pay via the on-site fee machine or the mobile app (scan & pay); cash is not accepted. To reach the campground, head east from Payson on State Route 260 for about 21 miles and turn onto the short forest road that leads to the site. Recreation at Christopher Creek centers on water and forest: the creek is stocked with rainbow trout each spring, and anglers may also encounter brook and brown trout, making it a reliable spot for casting from the bank. Beyond fishing and swimming, the surrounding Tonto National Forest supports mountain biking, horseback riding and hiking; horse campers and riders will find routes in the vicinity, while boaters should plan a short drive east to the Rim Country Lakes. Woods Canyon Lake about ten minutes away offers boat access and a nature trail that loops the shoreline, and the small hamlet of Christopher Creek has a few dining options if you want to skip cooking at camp. For facility-specific questions or current conditions, call the campground at (928) 474-7900.
