Upper Tonto Creek Campground is currently closed. When it is open the site is strictly first-come, first-served: you must physically arrive at the campground to purchase and claim a site rather than reserving in advance. There are a total of 10 campsites, and each is designated to accommodate both RVs and tents, so small groups with mixed rigs can generally be accommodated. Payment is handled on-site; if the Scan and Pay QR-code option is available you'll be able to pay through the free Recreation.gov mobile app, but because some remote areas of Tonto National Forest have limited or no cellular service you should download the app before you leave home. The campground lies within Tonto National Forest in the Upper Tonto Creek area, placing it in a landscape where the broader forest supports activities such as auto touring, hiking, fishing, boating, swimming, climbing, horseback riding and horse camping, biking, picnicking, recreational vehicle use, and wildlife viewing. With only ten multi-use sites and a self-claiming policy, the site tends to be low-capacity and more dependent on visitor self-sufficiency than larger developed campgrounds, so plan accordingly for food, water and supplies. Before you go, check Recreation.gov or contact the forest for current status, fee information, seasonal openings, and any access advisories so you arrive prepared.
