Little Coon Creek Campground sits on the shore of Gillham Lake in southwestern Arkansas, a wooded pocket of shoreline shaped by the Cossatot River. The lake itself covers about 1,370 surface acres with roughly 36 miles of shoreline, and the dam that created the project was completed in 1975; the Cossatot has a National Wild and Scenic River designation upriver. The campground is easy to reach from US-59/71 at Grannis head east on County Road 3/Frachiseur Road for about five miles and follow park signs and project personnel are on site to answer questions and help visitors plan their stay. There are 11 developed sites in total: ten that accommodate both RVs and tents and one tent-only site. Each developed site offers potable water and 50-amp electric hookups, which makes the loop suitable for larger RVs as well as tent campers. On-site comforts include hot showers and restrooms, a group picnic shelter, a playground, and a nearby dump station; a boat ramp and a handicap-accessible fishing pier put the lake and its water-based recreation within easy reach. Recreation centers on the water and the river: boating and water sports are common here, and anglers pursue smallmouth, largemouth and spotted bass, saugeye, crappie, channel and flathead catfish, plus a variety of sunfish fly fishing is popular along the Cossatot as well. Hunting is permitted north of Little Coon Creek Park and on the lake's eastern shore; check Arkansas Game and Fish for season dates and regulations. Lake maps and local information (including where to buy bait, tackle, food and other supplies) are available from park attendants, and the Corps of Engineers can provide current details on fees and reservation policies. For short side trips, Cossatot River State Park Natural Area and Queen Wilhelmina State Park are both within a drive to the north, offering additional hiking routes, interpretive programs, and scenery beyond the campground.
