Oak Grove Campground sits on the shore of DeQueen Lake in southwest Arkansas, part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Rolling Fork River project. The dam, completed in 1977 for flood control and water supply, created a recreation landscape that now offers about 32 miles of shoreline and some 8,700 acres of rolling public land. The lake is an obvious draw for water-oriented campers: several boat ramps serve the campground and make launching for boating, water sports and fishing straightforward. Anglers will find a wide mix of species largemouth and smallmouth bass, spotted bass, black and white crappie, channel and flathead catfish and assorted sunfish and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has also stocked hybrid striped bass. While there aren't designated hiking trails at DeQueen, virtually all project lands outside developed recreation areas and the dam vicinity are open to hikers, and the same broad public access makes hunting and wildlife viewing common pursuits in season. Oak Grove's developed camping area offers a practical base for those activities: the campground contains 38 total campsites, 36 of which accommodate both RVs and tents while 2 are tent-only, and sites are described as spacious. Modern conveniences on site include flush toilets, hot showers and drinking water, and there is a large group picnic shelter available by reservation (Group Shelter Electric fee $25). Project staff are on hand to help with questions, and nearby DeQueen provides gas, groceries and medical services; food, bait and tackle are also available near the lake. If you need details about campsite reservations, seasonal openings, or access rules for hunting and boating, check with Corps personnel at the project before you arrive so you can plan the mix of fishing, paddling, hiking and picnicking that fits your trip.
