Horseshoe Bend Campground sits along the Saline River just below Dierks Dam, where the river feeds through a three-quarter-mile engineered whitewater course and the terrain rises to a 300-foot vertical cliff that marks the edge of the Ouachitas. The campsite area is compact but well-appointed for river users: there are 13 total sites 12 that accommodate both RVs and tents (Class A) and one tent-only site laid out along the riverfront so most sites have easy water access. Day-use amenities include a pavilion, a playground and picnic spots; the overnight area is supported by two restrooms and a single shower facility. To reach Horseshoe Bend from the town of Dierks, follow Highway 70 toward DeQueen and continue on Dierks Lake Road; the campground road is the last turn before crossing the dam, putting you squarely in the river corridor south of the dam. The river feature is the campground's defining attraction: an artificial whitewater park shaped by native river stone with four or more drops that, when dam spillway releases permit, can produce conditions ranging roughly from Class II to Class IV conditions that made this section suitable for Olympic trials in the late 1990s. Because the course depends on spillway releases, paddlers should check current release schedules and come prepared; the site is popular for training and practicing techniques when flows are right. Beyond paddling, Dierks Lake supports boating, fishing, hiking, picnicking, water sports and wildlife viewing across the broader project area. Overnight accommodations, food, bait and tackle are available in the nearby towns, and popular day trips include Crater of Diamonds State Park about 30 miles away and Hot Springs National Park roughly an hour's drive; Choctaw Nation attractions near Broken Bow are also about an hour away. For the latest on fees, reservations, seasonal availability and any special access requirements, consult the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project office or website before you go.
