Cossatot Reefs Campground occupies a tree-lined stretch of Gillham Lake on the Cossatot River in southwest Arkansas, roughly ten miles north of De Queen off US-59/71 before you drop into the Gillham Lake area. The lake itself covers about 1,370 surface acres with roughly 36 miles of shoreline, and the river that feeds it is part of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers system the result is a mix of open water, wooded shore, and river channel that frames the campground. There are 31 shady campsites in all: 28 sites set up for both RVs and tents, and 3 sites reserved for tent camping only. Families and larger groups will appreciate the large group shelter and a small playground/specialized sport area on site, while basic comforts such as hot showers, drinking water, and flush toilets make multi-night stays more convenient. Project personnel are on hand to answer questions, and stores and services near the lake provide food, bait, tackle and other supplies or overnight lodging if you need them. Recreation centers on the water but includes a surprising variety of options on land. A boat ramp gives straightforward access for powerboats and water-skiing; canoeists can put in below the dam for a roughly 16-mile float to U.S. Highway 71 South, or choose shorter downstream runs via Mize Crossing and Ladd Bridge. Anglers will find a healthy mix of species smallmouth, largemouth and spotted bass, crappie, channel and flathead catfish, plus assorted sunfish and wildlife viewing from shore or kayak is common. A short nature trail runs through a wooded pocket inside the campground and blooms with redbud and dogwood in spring. For up-to-date information on fees, reservations, seasonal availability and any access restrictions or ramp conditions, contact the Corps of Engineers project office or on-site staff before you go.
