“Very small campground at the end of a dirt road. Right on West Tensleep Lake. Beautiful. Good hiking trails and close to the wilderness boundary. Deb, the campground host, is very nice and keeps a clean restroom and camp.”
“Beautiful, small and quiet campground by a lovely lake. Easy access for several great day hikes into the Cloud Peak Wilderness. Sites are not large, but nicely shaded. Clean facilities.”

West Tensleep Lake Campground sits on the southern shore of West Tensleep Lake on the west side of the Cloud Peak Skyway, about 49 miles east of Worland on U.S. Highway 16 and then a seven-mile drive up West Tensleep Road (Forest Road 27). The site count is small and intimate 10 campsites in all: 9 sites are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents, while 1 is tent-only each site furnished with a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill. Basic services include accessible vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection; a dump station is available but not nearby (17 miles away on Powder River Pass), and firewood may be purchased from the campground host. Two non-towed vehicles are allowed per site; the first vehicle is included in the basic fee and an additional vehicle will be charged $9.00 per day at the campground. Reservations and seasonal availability are handled through recreation.gov; be aware refund requests made through that system incur a $10 processing fee and the reservation fee itself is non-refundable (the processing fee is retained by the reservation contractor). For on-the-ground questions the campground is administered by Gallatin Canyon Campgrounds (gccampgrounds13@gmail.com). Recreation at West Tensleep is defined by water and wilderness access: the 125-acre lake permits only non-motorized watercraft, making it a quiet place for canoeing and fishing for rainbow, brown and brook trout. The West Tensleep Lake Trail starts just outside the campground and leads into the Cloud Peak Wilderness, passing Lake Helen, Lake Marion and Misty Moon Lake on the way to Cloud Peak (13,167 feet), the high point of the Bighorn Range. The surrounding forest of lodgepole pine, Douglas fir and spruce opens onto a network of off-road vehicle trails, jeep roads, hiking and horseback routes, and numerous fishing streams. A few miles away Meadowlark Lake allows motorized craft at no-wake speeds, and the old CCC-built High Park Lookout is reached by a short hike for expansive views. Nearby services such as Deer Haven Lodge and Meadowlark Lodge provide dining, lodging and guided horseback and fishing outings, while the broader Bighorn National Forest supports auto touring, biking, winter sports, hunting and other outdoor pursuits.
