Island Park Campground sits in a mixed stand of lodgepole pine, Douglas fir and spruce beside West Tensleep Creek, about 21 miles northeast of Ten Sleep along US Highway 16 and reached by a short drive north on Forest Service Road 27 near Deer Haven Lodge. The campground is a practical base for exploring the Cloud Peak Wilderness hiking trailheads begin roughly five miles away and for lake outings: West Tensleep Lake, a 125-acre non-motorized lake four miles from camp, is popular for canoeing and trout fishing (rainbow, brown and brook trout), while Meadowlark Lake lies about seven miles distant and permits motorized craft under a strict no-wake rule. Jeep roads and OHV trails, horseback riding routes, numerous fishing streams and historic points such as the old High Park Lookout (a short hike from Meadowlark) are all within easy reach, and nearby Deer Haven and Meadowlark lodges provide dining, supplies and guided trips should you need gear or local guiding. The campground itself is small and straightforward: nine single-family sites that accommodate both RVs and tents, each with a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill. Vault toilets, a hand-pump for drinking water and regular trash collection are provided; there are no utility hookups and the nearest dump station is about 17 miles away at Powder River Pass. Two non-towed vehicles are allowed per site the first vehicle is included in the basic fee and a second vehicle is charged $9 per day at the campground and reservations and cancellations are handled through recreation.gov (refund requests submitted there incur a $10 processing fee and the non-refundable reservation fee is retained by the reservation contractor). For current availability, seasonal access, or specific directions, contact the campground manager, Gallatin Canyon Campgrounds, at gccampgrounds13@gmail.com.
