About

Sitting Bull Campground sits on the west side of the Cloud Peak Skyway, at the edge of a lodgepole pine forest beside a broad mountain meadow that opens onto wide views of the Bighorn Mountains and easy access to the Cloud Peak Wilderness. The site is a base for water-based outings at nearby Meadowlark Lake a 325-acre, wake-less lake that welcomes canoes and kayaks and holds rainbow, cutthroat, brown and brook trout while West Tensleep Lake, about 10 miles to the north, is restricted to non-motorized craft and marks the trailhead for the popular West Tensleep Lake Trail into the Wilderness. From short loop walks to steeper treks that cross creeks and ridge lines, trails and scenic jeep roads fan out from the area; off-road vehicle trails and extra fishing streams are also close by. Wildlife viewing is a reliable pastime in the meadow and forest margins, and the historic High Park Lookout (a Civilian Conservation Corps structure) is a short hike for expansive panoramas. Nearby Deer Haven and Meadowlark Lodges offer meals, lodging and outfitting including guided horseback rides and fishing support if you need services beyond the campground. Practical details matter here: Sitting Bull has 41 campsites, and each site is developed for both RV and tent use, with most sites offering a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill; Site 006 meets established accessibility standards and the campground provides accessible vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection. The campground is administered by Gallatin Canyon Campgrounds (gccampgrounds13@gmail.com), and is reached from Ten Sleep by driving east on Highway 16 for about 20 miles and then a short turn onto Forest Service Road 432. Fees are modest but specific: a single site (1 8 people) is $18 per night for one non-towed vehicle with trailer; a double site (site #41, 9 16 people) is $36 per night for two non-towed vehicles with trailers. Two non-towed vehicles are allowed per site; extra cars (including what they tow) cost $10 per day and are charged at the campground, and the fourth car (maximum) is free. Firewood can be purchased from the campground host. If you reserve through recreation.gov note that refund requests incur a $10 processing fee and the reservation service contractor retains the non-refundable reservation fee; the campground concessionaire will not return those fees because they are retained by the contractor.
