HETTINGER PARK ROAD
Open in Google Maps ↗
Fourteen miles west of Buffalo on U.S. Highway 16, on the eastern flank of the Cloud Peak Skyway and just outside the Cloud Peak Wilderness, Hettinger Group Area occupies a small meadow surrounded by a dense stand of lodgepole pine. The campground consists of a single group site (TOTAL CAMPSITES: 1) that welcomes both RVs and tents and can be used for either overnight stays or day-use picnicking. From the site a short trail leads to Tie Hack Reservoir, a nearby waterbody popular for canoeing and for trout anglers chasing rainbow, cutthroat, brown and brook trout; the Circle Park Trailhead is about 3 miles away and provides access to numerous alpine lakes and two 12,000-foot peaks inside the Cloud Peak Wilderness. Scenic off-road drives on Elgin Park, Pole Creek and Crazy Woman Canyon Roads are within reach for high-clearance vehicles, and those same routes are open to hikers and mountain bikers. South Fork Lodge is close by if you need meals, a bunk, guided horseback rides, a small store or a fishing pond. The group site is arranged to handle larger parties up to 150 people and comes with picnic tables, grills and a communal campfire circle; vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection are provided, and firewood may be purchased from the campground host. Group rates are tiered by party size: $65 for 1 35 people, $85 for 36 60, $105 for 61 120, and $135 for 121 150 (150 is the maximum); any fee for exceeding the number on your reservation will be collected at the campground. The nearest RV dump is 18 miles away at Powder River Pass. The site is administered by Gallatin Canyon Campgrounds (gccampgrounds13@gmail.com); reservations and refunds are handled through recreation.gov note that refund requests through that site incur a $10 cancellation processing fee and a non-refundable reservation fee retained by the reservation contractor, and the campground concessionaire cannot return those contractor-held fees.
