TIE HACK ROAD
Open in Google Maps ↗
Tie Hack Campground sits at about 7,900 feet on the eastern approach to the Cloud Peak Skyway in Bighorn National Forest, just west of Buffalo, Wyoming follow US-16 roughly 12 miles and then a half-mile on Tie Hack Reservoir Road to reach the site (the area is also sometimes described as about 15 miles west of Buffalo). The campground is small and forested, with rock outcroppings along the shore of Tie Hack Reservoir and a dense stand of lodgepole pine overhead. There are 19 total campsites, and each of those 19 sites is set up to accommodate both RVs and tents; all sites include a picnic table and a campfire ring with a grill and are single-family sites that can hold up to eight people. Two sites meet accessibility standards, and the campground provides accessible vault toilets, drinking water, and trash collection. Two non-towed vehicles are allowed per site: the first vehicle is included in the basic fee, while a second vehicle is charged $10.00 per day at the campground; firewood may be purchased from the campground host. Gallatin Canyon Campgrounds administers Tie Hack (email: gccampgrounds13@gmail.com). Recreation at Tie Hack centers on the reservoir and nearby trails: a short trail from the campground leads to the water where canoeing is popular and anglers fish for rainbow, cutthroat, brown and brook trout. For longer hikes, the Circle Park Trailhead is about three miles away and provides access to multiple alpine lakes and two 12,000-foot peaks inside the Cloud Peak Wilderness; scenic off-road driving and mixed-use routes are available on Elgin Park, Pole Creek and Crazy Woman Canyon Roads where hiking and mountain biking are also permitted. If you need supplies, South Fork Lodge nearby offers dining, lodging, guided horseback rides, a fishing pond and a small store with fishing and camping items; larger group camping is available at nearby Willow Park, Hettinger, Ranger Creek Recreation Area and Pine Island. If you reserve through recreation.gov be aware that refund requests are charged a $10 processing fee and the reservation contractor retains that processing fee plus any non-refundable reservation fee; requests to the campground concessionaire for return of those fees will be declined because those charges are retained by the reservation service contractor.
