MIDDLE FORK ROAD
Open in Google Maps ↗
Middle Fork Campground sits alongside the Middle Fork of Clear Creek amid stands of pine and aspen, 13 14 miles west of Buffalo on U.S. Highway 16 and immediately adjacent to the Cloud Peak Skyway and the approach to the Cloud Peak Wilderness. The site is small and quiet just nine campsites total and each site is configured to accommodate both tents and RVs, with a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill at every site. Basic services include vault toilets, drinking water and trash collection; firewood is available from the campground host and the nearest dump station is 18 miles away at Powder River Pass. For anglers and paddlers, Tie Hack Reservoir is a short drive and is restricted to non-motorized boats, with rainbow, cutthroat, brown and brook trout commonly fished; hikers can reach the Circle Park Trailhead about 3.5 miles from camp to access alpine lakes and two 12,000-foot peaks in the Cloud Peak Wilderness. Scenic backcountry driving and mixed-use trails are nearby on Elgin Park, Pole Creek and Crazy Woman Canyon Roads, and mountain biking is permitted on those routes and on trails up to the wilderness boundary. Practical details matter here: sites are available for reservation and are administered by Gallatin Canyon Campgrounds (gccampgrounds13@gmail.com), and cancellation refunds requested through recreation.gov carry a $10 processing fee; the reservation fee itself is non-refundable and retained by the reservation contractor. Vehicle rules are important for planning two non-towed vehicles are allowed per site, with the first vehicle included in the basic site fee and a $10/day charge for the second vehicle (including what it tows); Site #1 is a designated double site that can be reserved as a single (1 8 people) for $17/day with one non-towed vehicle and trailer or as a double (9 16 people) for $34/day with two non-towed vehicles and trailers, and an extra car beyond those allowances is $10/day (a fourth car maximum is noted as free). Beyond the campground itself, the broader Bighorn National Forest offers auto touring, biking, boating, fishing, horseback riding and winter-sports opportunities, plus historic sites and fire-lookout cabins for those who want to explore farther from camp.
