Kettle Falls Campground sits on the northern edge of Lake Roosevelt where the upper Columbia River runs between high, rocky walls shaped by ancient floods. The site is forested and looks out over the long, 130-mile impoundment created by Grand Coulee Dam; much of the lake's water begins as snow and glacier melt in the Canadian Rockies, and the shoreline here is a mix of rock and small beaches. Wildlife is a constant presence elk, deer, moose and bald eagles are commonly sighted and anglers will find dozens of species in the lake, including walleye, bass, rainbow trout, salmon and sturgeon (sturgeon fishing is permitted only during a short, regulated season). The campground is less than 10 minutes by car from the small town of Kettle Falls, where you'll find grocery stores and the park visitor center, and historic sites such as St. Paul's Mission are only about two miles away; the area's fur-trade and Native American history is well interpreted at nearby park sites and the visitor center. Recreational options listed for the national recreation area include boating, camping, fishing, hiking and swimming note, however, that the campground's shoreline drops off in places with a rocky descent to the water, so swimming access is more limited than boating and watersports. The campground itself contains 75 campsites that accommodate both RVs and tents, divided across three loops: Loop 1 has 20 sites, Loop 2 has 28 sites, and Loop 3 has 27 sites. A multi-lane boat launch sits directly inside the facility, which makes the campground especially popular with boaters, fishermen and water-skiers; because of that convenience, many activities can begin right from your campsite. Reservations are required this is a reservation-only campground and all bookings and fees are handled through recreation.gov and the location is unstaffed, so plan ahead; for general information you can contact the park's main office at (509) 754-7889. Be aware of the reservation cancellation policy: cancelling the day before or on the day of arrival will incur a $10 service fee and forfeiture of the first night's use fee (not to exceed the total paid); a one-night reservation cancelled on arrival day will forfeit the entire amount paid without the additional service fee.
