Antelope Flat Campground sits at about 6,000 feet on the shoreline of Flaming Gorge Reservoir inside the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area of Ashley National Forest, and nearly every site looks out over water and the red cliffs that rim the lake. The campground has 50 campsites in total 46 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 4 tent-only sites plus four group sites and a number of family sites. Group areas come with a picnic shelter, tables, campfire ring, grills and tent pads, while family sites feature a cabana, picnic table and campfire ring (some family sites include grills). Practical amenities are solid for a reservoir-side camp: flush toilets, drinking water and a dump station are on-site, and there's a boat ramp right at the campground. The setting is open sagebrush country dotted with Russian olive and cottonwood trees, so shade is limited; expect warm daytime temperatures and much cooler nights. Recreation centers on the reservoir Antelope Flat gives easy, immediate access to boating, water skiing, jet skiing and fishing, with Flaming Gorge known for excellent lake, brown and rainbow trout. You can also launch kayaks, canoes or try scuba diving and swimming in suitable conditions; the Green River below Flaming Gorge Dam is nearby for rafting and canyon scenery. The dam itself has a visitor center and guided tours of the hydroelectric plant and exhibits on local history. The campground is reached from U.S. 191 near Dutch John via Forest Road 145 (a well-maintained gravel road), so it's convenient from Vernal, Manila or points north on U.S. 191. For up-to-date fees, reservation policies and seasonal openings, check the Ashley National Forest or Flaming Gorge NRA webpages before you go; the area of the forest also offers biking, horseback riding, OHV routes, interpretive programs, picnicking, wildlife viewing and overnight fire lookout/cabin opportunities within the broader recreation area.
