Perched at about 7,400 feet just off Highway 150 (the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway), Ponderosa Group Campground sits on a forested hillside above the Lower Provo River and feels like a quiet pocket of the Uinta Mountains. Towering Ponderosa pines shade the single site while sagebrush and summer wildflowers edge the clearing; the highway runs below the hill and the river can be reached across the road for trout fishing. A network of trailheads is within easy reach Yellow Pine, North Fork and Shingle Creek all begin nearby and the byway provides access to additional hiking, biking, horseback routes, off-road vehicle trails and the lakes and streams of the High Uintas Wilderness. The approach is a short but steep, rough dirt road, so plan for limited ground clearance and slower travel; from Kamas the campground is about 5.7 miles up Highway 150 and is marked by a sign and dirt spur on the left. For facility-specific questions call (385) 273-1100. Facilities are deliberately simple and geared to groups: there is one group site that accommodates up to 100 people, with large picnic tables, campfire circles and a scattering of smaller tables around the perimeter; the listing is for a combined RV and tent site so there's room for tents and smaller RVs or trailers. Only vault toilets are provided, so campers must bring their own water and garbage bags. The posted fee for the group site is $134 per night, with an additional $10 for each extra vehicle; reservations are handled through Recreation.gov (transactions appear on statements as "Recreation.gov 877-444-6777"). Be aware of the reservation policies: a $10 service fee applies to changes or cancellations, reservations may have restrictions on changes within the booking window, late cancellations or group facility cancellations within 14 days of arrival will incur the $10 fee and forfeiture of the first night's fee, and no-shows can be charged $20 plus forfeiture of use fees. Refund requests must be submitted within 14 days after your scheduled departure.
