“We love this campground and go often! It's got beautiful views, nice big trees, and it's very clean. Every site is great! This year the host was very kind watching our site through the night while we went to the ER in Vernal.”

Melissa L 5 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Great place, clean bathrooms, all our camping neighbors were respectful and nice. ”

About

Firefighters Campground sits on a gently sloping hillside at about 6,900 feet, dotted with ponderosa pines and juniper and established as a memorial to three firefighters who died in the 1977 Cart Creek Fire. The campground contains 60 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents, arranged in two loops Loop A with 33 sites and Loop C with 27 and includes several family sites, six of which are accessible. Sites come with a picnic table and a metal campfire ring (some also have grills); roads and parking spurs inside the campground are paved. Basic services on site include flush toilets, drinking water and a dump station, and firewood can be purchased from the host. Public showers are not in the campground itself but are available 2.5 miles away at Deer Run Campground. Just across the road the Bootleg Amphitheater provides bleacher seating for about 120 and a screen support for summer interpretive programs, and a scenic overlook dedicated to the fallen firefighters offers a clear focal point for reflection and views. Recreational access is one of this campground's strongest features: Bear Canyon Trail starts across the road and is an easy 3-mile round trip that leads to views of Red Canyon and Flaming Gorge, while Flaming Gorge Reservoir lies roughly three miles away and is the area hub for boating, water skiing, jet skiing, canoeing, kayaking, swimming and scuba diving as well as trout fishing for lake, brown and rainbow trout. Beyond the reservoir, the Flaming Gorge Dam and its visitor center and guided plant tours add historical and interpretive interest, and the Green River below the dam is a prime spot for multi-day rafting through striking geology, river history and sites of Native American rock art. The campground sits within the broader Ashley National Forest recreation matrix biking, horseback riding, OHV use, picnicking, wildlife viewing and overnight stays in fire lookouts/cabins are all available in the region so it works well as a basecamp for both water-focused days and land-based exploring. Specifics on fees, reservation windows and seasonal openings aren't provided here, so plan to check the U.S. Forest Service or Flaming Gorge NRA website (or call the local ranger district) for current reservation policies and up-to-date access information before you go.
