Perched at about 6,000 feet in the rolling high-desert around Flaming Gorge Reservoir, Dripping Springs Campground looks out over sage-covered hills punctuated by Russian olive and cottonwood, with nearly every site offering reservoir and mountain views. Its main draw is proximity to the Green River and the Little Hole area: Little Hole Boat Launch and Day-Use Area are a short drive away and are prime spots for rainbow, brown and cutthroat trout fishing and for putting a raft or kayak into the river. The 7-mile Little Hole National Recreation Trail begins close to the campground and follows the river from Flaming Gorge Dam; the trail is easily broken into shorter segments if you don't want to do the entire length. Beyond fishing and day boating, the larger Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area supports a wide range of activities hiking and mountain biking, water sports from swimming to water skiing and scuba diving, wildlife viewing, and guided interpretive programs and the nearby dam and visitor center run tours and exhibits about the area's history and hydropower operations. On the practical side, Dripping Springs offers 26 individual campsites that can accommodate both RVs and tents, and there are larger group shelters available for bigger parties. Single-family sites come with shelters, picnic tables and campfire rings; the group sites add large shelters, extra tables, campfire rings and grills. Flush toilets and drinking water are provided, but shade is limited so expect warm days and cool nights. The campground is open year-round; during the reservation season some sites can be reserved, while outside that window campsites are first-come, first-served. Access is from U.S. 191 via Forest Road 075 just east of Dutch John the campground sits roughly 40 65 miles from nearby towns depending on your route and the Forest Service website for Ashley National Forest/Flaming Gorge NRA is the best place to check current fees, reservations and road conditions before you go.
