About

Old Folks Flat sits at about 8,600 feet along Utah Highway 31 on the Huntington Canyon National Scenic Byway, roughly 21 miles from the town of Huntington. The campground is shaded by large spruces and quaking aspens and lies just across the road from Huntington Creek, a Blue Ribbon fishery known for brown, cutthroat and rainbow trout. The canyon corridor is lively in summer with wildflowers and in autumn with colorful foliage; wildlife sightings are common. Hikers and riders can reach the 4-mile Left Fork of the Huntington National Recreation Trail and the 10-mile Fish Creek Trail from the area, and the byway itself is part of the 86-mile Energy Loop that climbs above 10,000 feet. Nearby facilities and points of interest include the Stuart Guard Station Visitor Center where you can pick up historical exhibits and local recreation information and other nearby campgrounds such as Bridges and Little Rock. The campground is small and easy to reach by paved road in any passenger vehicle. According to the current site inventory there are nine campsites, all configured to accommodate both RVs and tents. Sites come equipped with picnic tables and metal campfire rings with grills; the facility has been upgraded to provide flush toilets and drinking water spigots. Roads and parking spurs within the campground are gravel. There is no electricity at sites and no on-site garbage collection, so plan to pack out trash and bring any power you need. Although Forest Service descriptions note group-capacity areas in the Old Folks Flat vicinity, the mapped site count at this campground is nine; for up-to-date information about fees, reservations, seasonal openings or larger group arrangements, contact the Manti-La Sal National Forest office or the Stuart Guard Station Visitor Center before you go.
