Jana W ★ 4 · May 2024Nice, clean campsite. It is well shaded. This would be a spot to camp in the hot summer months. Even though the campsite was reserved we had people come into the campsite which was disappointing. Maybe people don't get camping etiquette.

Big Rock Group Campground sits at about 7,600 feet along the Huntington Canyon National Scenic Byway (Utah Highway 31), roughly 20 miles west of the town of Huntington. The site is a single, large group campsite the campground contains exactly one site that accepts both RVs and tents and can accommodate up to 50 people. A broad gravel parking area gives ample room for RVs of any size, and accessible vault toilets are provided, but there is no drinking water on site and no waste-disposal services; visitors must carry out all garbage. Pine and fir trees line the edges of the clearing and Huntington Creek runs alongside the campground, though the site itself offers limited shade within the group area, so plan accordingly for sun exposure and cooler mountain nights at this elevation. The immediate area is set up for a range of outdoor pursuits: Huntington Creek is a Blue Ribbon fishery known for brown, cutthroat and rainbow trout, and nearby trails include the 4-mile Left Fork of the Huntington National Recreation Trail (hikers and horseback riders) and the 10-mile Fish Creek Trail (hikers, bikers and horseback riders). Beyond trailheads, visitors use the canyon for mountain biking, rock climbing, hunting, horseback riding and scenic drives along the Energy Loop portion of the byway that climbs above 10,000 feet. The historic Stuart Guard Station Visitor Center is close by with exhibits on 1930s ranger life and Civilian Conservation Corps work. Because specific fees, reservation rules and seasonal opening information aren't listed here, plan to bring your own water and supplies and contact the Manti-La Sal National Forest office before you go to confirm current access, any permit needs and seasonal conditions.
