Scaredman Recreation Site sits about 40 miles east of Roseburg off Highway 138, up Canton Creek at roughly 1,390 feet in a quiet, heavily wooded stretch of the North Umpqua corridor. The site is small and minimally developed: ten campsites each set up to accommodate both tents and RVs are arranged along the creek and come with picnic tables and fire rings. A vault toilet serves the campground and there's a riverside day-use area for picnics and lounging. Although spigots are installed, drinking water is currently unavailable from the campground taps, so plan to bring your own supply. Reservations are required at least five days before arrival; do not rely on the "FF" (first-come, first-serve) indicator because no on-site transactions or walk-up registrations are permitted. Recreation at Scaredman centers on low-key, waterside activities: the immediate area is best for picnicking, relaxing, and accessing several undeveloped swimming holes on Canton and nearby Steamboat Creek. Note that both Canton and Steamboat creeks are closed to angling, but excellent river recreation is only three miles downstream where the North Umpqua opens up that stretch is known for class III whitewater boating and world-class fly-fishing (angling on that river corridor is restricted to fly-fishing only). Within a short drive you can also reach longer hiking and mountain-biking options on the North Umpqua Trail, more waterfall viewing, or take the Rogue Umpqua National Scenic Byway for a scenic loop if you're combining drives with outdoor time.
