What guests say

Verbatim from guest reviews on Recreation.gov ↗ (294 reviews, ★ 5.0). Not written or edited by us.

“A well maintained campground right on the river. There is a quaint little beach behind the amphitheater that allowed for a chance to cool off without getting into the main current. ”

michael d 4 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“No phone service here. The on-site phone doesn't work. Host can't accept payment. Why not use the payment dropbox already at the park. Lovely park, beautifully maintained, but we hate the check-in process. ”

About

Susan Creek Campground sits along the green ribbon of the North Umpqua River on the western edge of the Cascade Mountains, just past milepost 28 on Highway 138. Campsites are set under a mature forest of fir, cedar and hemlock some trunks measure up to seven feet across and the constant rush of water over volcanic bedrock is part of the background soundtrack. Short walks from the loop put you on the 1.5-mile Emerald Trail or up a brief path to the 50-foot Susan Creek Falls, while longer outings begin on the 79-mile North Umpqua Trail, which hikers and mountain bikers can reach from nearby crossings such as Tioga Bridge or the Swiftwater day-use area. The river draws fly-fishers chasing salmon and steelhead, and also brings swimmers, rafters and kayakers; note that this stretch of the North Umpqua includes class III whitewater and deserves careful attention. Practical details are straightforward: the campground has 29 sites total, each configured to accommodate both RVs and tents, and it operates seasonally from late April through late October. All sites are reservation only until further notice; make bookings at Recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777. On-site amenities include multiple drinking-water spigots, flush restrooms, an emergency phone, nature trails and an amphitheater where Bureau of Land Management staff present weekend evening programs in July and August; the horseshoe pits are currently closed. Pets are permitted but must be kept on a leash six feet or shorter, and fishing on this stretch is restricted to fly-fishing only.
