Chris P ★ 4 · Jan 2020Site was excellent. Hosts were amazing. Too way too long to get our deposit back though and it’s too difficult to make reservations.

Lone Pine Group Campground sits along Rock Creek, a tributary of the North Umpqua River on the western edge of the Cascade Mountains, where towering fir, cedar and hemlock shade a loop of group sites built on the footprint of an old Rock Creek sawmill that operated from the 1930s through the 1950s. The facility was listed as closed through the 2023 season for fire damage, so check current status before you pack gear; when open the loop contains eleven separate sites and can accommodate up to about 110 campers, giving large parties a mix of shared space and pockets of privacy. Access is straightforward from Roseburg roughly 22 miles east on Highway 138, then north on Rock Creek Road for a few miles and the campground is a short drive from the larger Umpqua National Forest, which offers the broader landscape of glacier-cut slopes and dense forest across nearly a million acres. Recreation at Lone Pine is low-key and family-oriented: picnicking, hiking, and in summer, swimming in the cool creek are common pastimes, while spring and fall bring migrating salmon and steelhead. To protect native fish runs, Rock Creek itself is closed to angling, but the North Umpqua River about a five-mile drive provides abundant fishing (fly-fishing is the norm on the river), plus whitewater rafting and kayaking opportunities. On-site amenities for groups include a pavilion, a volleyball court and horseshoe pits, and across the way a baseball field that can be reserved through the Millpond Pavilion rental; the Rogue Umpqua Scenic Byway, the Rock Creek Fish Hatchery (with trout feeding and interpretive viewing), and the 79-mile North Umpqua Trail are all within easy reach for day trips from the campground.
