“Love this campground. Quiet. Many sites right by the beautiful N Umpqua. A definite plan to return next season is in the works!!”

Horseshoe Bend Campground sits tucked among old-growth Douglas fir, sugar pine, and mixed deciduous trees right on the banks of the North Umpqua River, part of a 34-mile Wild & Scenic stretch famed for salmon and steelhead runs and lively whitewater. The setting is wooded and riverfront: many campsites back up to the water and the paved spurs and roads make the short drive in straightforward for tow rigs and trailers. There are 25 sites in all each configured to accommodate both tents and RVs 12 of those sites can be reserved in advance while the remaining 13 are held for first-come, first-served visitors. Basic services are solid for a forest campground: potable water, flush toilets with hand-washing sinks, paved spurs, picnic tables and fire rings at every site, some sites with barbecue grills, and a campground host on duty 24 hours a day; trash receptacles are provided and a non-motorized boat ramp is nearby for pedestrians and paddlers. Recreation hangs very naturally off the campground: the North Umpqua Trail runs nearly parallel to the river and offers sections suited to hikers and mountain bikers of varying ability, and you can launch rafts or wade for fly fishing right from the vicinity. Swimming in calmer river pockets, photography, bird and wildlife watching (eagles, owls, salmon and more), and access to longer driving itineraries such as the Rogue-Umpqua National Scenic Byway or a day trip to Crater Lake are all realistic additions to a camping stay here. Practicalities to note before you arrive: additional vehicles incur a $5 per-day fee that must be paid at the campground fee kiosk on arrival, and additional camping units are charged $15 per night. To reach Horseshoe Bend from Roseburg, follow OR-138 east toward the Cascades for roughly 50 miles and turn onto the Forest Service roads that lead a short distance into the site; expect a forest-road approach rather than highway frontage.
