Sunset Campground sits along the shore of Lake of the Woods about 30 miles northwest of Klamath Falls, reached via Highway 140 and a short drive south on Dead Indian Memorial Road. The facility offers 56 campsites in a stand of tall conifers, with widely spaced sites that include lakefront spots and clear views of Mount McLoughlin. Sites are standard units intended for both RVs and tents, and the campground is divided into four areas Loop A (18 sites), AREA SUNSET (2 sites), Loop B (18 sites) and Loop C (18 sites) so couples, small groups and larger parties can usually find contiguous sites. On-site amenities include picnic tables, campfire rings, drinking water and flush toilets; a boat ramp and a designated swimming beach put the water within easy reach, and a nearby resort provides additional services such as basic amenities, lodging and dining. Staffing is seasonal: the campground is staffed from May 15 through September 15 (call (541) 274-0386), and is unstaffed the remainder of the year (for general information call (866) 201-4194); check with Forest Service contacts for current fees and reservation policies before you go. The campground is a practical base for the wide range of outdoor pursuits that define this part of the Fremont-Winema National Forest. On the lake, anglers can fish for rainbow and brown trout, Kokanee salmon, bass and perch by boat or from shore; kayaks, canoes and swimming are popular summer options. Trails and dirt roads around the lake connect to backcountry riding and hiking opportunities, and the nearby Sky Lakes Wilderness a mosaic of more than 200 ponds and lakes, rocky ridges and timbered slopes rising toward Mount McLoughlin (9,495 ft) is about six miles wide and 27 miles long for longer day trips or multi-day routes. In the shoulder seasons and winter, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling are common. Wildlife is abundant across the mixed sage and forest landscape: expect to see mule deer, Rocky Mountain elk, pronghorn and a variety of waterfowl in migration periods, with trout species in the waters and occasional sightings of black bear, mountain lion or bobcat. For scenic drives and extended exploration, the Rogue-Umpqua National Scenic Byway and Crater Lake National Park are within reasonable day-trip distance.
